Zadar, Croatia
The Church of St Donatus is Zadar’s most distinctive historic landmark, famous for its unusual circular shape and origins in the 9th century. Built beside the Roman Forum, it reflects the city’s layered past, with parts of ancient stone reused in its walls. No longer a functioning church, it is valued for its simple early medieval architecture and remarkable acoustics, which are often showcased during concerts. For visitors, it offers a quick but memorable stop and one of the clearest introductions to Zadar’s Roman and medieval heritage.
