Roys Peak Track is a popular alpine day hike near Wānaka, offering a steady climb to panoramic views over Lake Wānaka, Glendhu Bay, and the Southern Alps. The 16 km return trail (about 5–6 hours) follows a well-formed farm track with consistent switchbacks and little shade. Highlights include the famous ridgeline viewpoint and seasonal tussock landscapes. It’s best for reasonably fit walkers; carry water, sun protection, and check weather. The track is closed for lambing roughly October–November. Parking is limited, so early starts help avoid crowds and midday heat. Permits aren’t required; drones are not allowed.
