Venice, Italy
Spanning Venice’s Rio di Palazzo, the 17th-century Bridge of Sighs links the Doge’s Palace to the former prison. Its delicate white limestone and latticed windows contrast with its somber purpose: prisoners crossed here after sentencing, allegedly sighing at their last glimpse of Venice. Today, it’s best viewed from the Ponte della Paglia or by gondola beneath. Visit if you’re interested in Venetian justice, Baroque architecture by Antonio Contino, or iconic photo spots near St. Mark’s. The interior crossing is included with Doge’s Palace tours; timing matters—early morning or late afternoon offers softer light and fewer crowds.
