Te Anau, New Zealand
The Te Anau–Manapouri Control Gates mark the start of the Waiau River and regulate flows between Lakes Te Anau and Manapouri—key to the Manapouri hydro scheme. A short drive from Te Anau, the site offers an easy riverside walk and access to the Lake2Lake Cycle Trail. Visitors come for calm water views, trout-spotting, and insight into Fiordland’s energy history. It’s a low-key stop suited to walkers, cyclists, and engineering-curious travelers, best paired with a picnic or as a leg-stretcher en route to Doubtful Sound. No admission fee; facilities are minimal.
