Strasbourg, France
The Barrage Vauban is a 17th-century defensive weir spanning the Ill River, built by Vauban to protect Strasbourg. Today it doubles as a pedestrian passage and viewpoint. Inside, exhibits explain the city’s fortifications; on the rooftop terrace, you’ll get one of the best panoramas of Petite France and the Ponts Couverts. It’s an easy, central stop that combines architecture, history, and photography. Ideal for travelers interested in military engineering or scenic cityscapes, and a worthwhile visit alongside nearby historic quarters. Entry is typically free, and the visit is short, making it convenient to include in a walking tour.
