About Osthofentor

The Osthofentor is Soest’s best-preserved medieval city gate, built around 1523–1528 as part of the town’s fortifications. Its stout sandstone-and-brick tower, machicolations, and narrow passage illustrate late Gothic military architecture. Today it houses a small museum on Soest’s defenses and offers a close look at original construction details. Located near the old town’s green ramparts, it pairs well with a walk along the walls and nearby half-timbered streets. Visit if you enjoy tangible traces of urban history, compact museums, and atmospheric architecture without crowds. Typically open seasonally; check hours in advance.
