Siem Reap, Cambodia
Tonlé Sap Lake, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, is a dynamic ecosystem just south of Siem Reap. Its size and depth swell dramatically with the monsoon, creating flooded forests and supporting unique floating and stilted villages. Visitors come for boat trips through mangroves, birdwatching in the Tonlé Sap Biosphere Reserve, and insight into Cambodia’s freshwater fishing culture. Conditions vary by season: high water (Aug–Nov) offers lush scenery and easier navigation; dry season reveals exposed villages and fisheries. Facilities are basic, tours can feel commercial near Chong Kneas, and ethical operators to Kampong Khleang or Prek Toal are recommended.
