The Terrace of the Elephants, in Angkor Thom near Siem Reap, is a 12th-century royal viewing platform used for ceremonies and military parades. Its standout feature is an extensive bas-relief of elephants, garudas, lions, and warriors carved into laterite and sandstone walls. Visitors come for the craftsmanship, the sense of Angkor’s royal scale, and its easy pairing with nearby Bayon and Baphuon. The terrace is largely open-air and partially restored, so expect evocative ruins rather than intact structures. Best for history-minded travelers who enjoy exploring carvings and imagining court life amid expansive, shady grounds.
