Phnom Bakheng is a late 9th–10th century temple-mountain overlooking Angkor Wat and the Tonle Sap plain. Built by King Yasovarman I, its stepped pyramid and central sanctuary symbolize Mount Meru. Visitors climb a steep path to panoramic views, popular at sunset; timed entry and visitor limits apply. Much of the structure is weathered, but detailed lintels and terraces remain. Go if you value early Angkor architecture, sweeping vistas, and photography; skip if you prefer intact carvings, accessible sites, or quiet experiences, as crowds and uneven terrain are typical. Wear sturdy shoes and plan for heat.
