Šibenik, Croatia
St Nicholas Fortress is a 16th-century Venetian sea fort guarding the entrance to Šibenik’s channel. Built to defend the city from Ottoman attacks, it is one of the Adriatic’s best-preserved Renaissance fortifications and part of Šibenik’s UNESCO-listed Venetian defence system. Visitors come for its striking waterside setting, distinctive triangular shape, and insight into early modern military architecture. Reached by boat or a pleasant coastal walk, it suits travellers interested in history, photography, and quieter sights beyond the old town.
