About Metropolitan Cathedral of San José

The Metropolitan Cathedral of San José is the city’s principal Catholic church and a calm counterpoint to the busy downtown. Rebuilt after earthquakes, its neoclassical façade, coffered ceiling, and stained-glass windows reflect 19th–20th century resilience and style. Inside, you’ll find quiet chapels, notable religious art, and a peaceful nave suited for reflection. Located steps from the Central Park and the National Theater, it’s easy to combine with a walking tour. Visit for a short architectural stop, to observe local worship, or to understand San José’s historical center without devoting much time. Modest dress is recommended. Free entry; donations welcome.
