Ulugh Beg Observatory, in Samarkand, is one of the most important surviving sites from the Islamic Golden Age of astronomy. Built in the 1420s by the scholar-ruler Ulugh Beg, it was home to remarkably precise observations of the stars and planets. Today, visitors can see the remains of its giant underground sextant and explore a small museum that explains its scientific legacy. If you are interested in history, science, or Silk Road culture, it is a rewarding stop that offers a quieter, more specialized experience than Samarkand’s grand monuments.
