Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Tilya-Kori Madrasah is one of the three monuments framing Samarkand’s Registan Square and is best known for its richly gilded mosque interior, which gives the building its name, “covered with gold.” Built in the 17th century, it served both as a religious school and the city’s main Friday mosque. Visitors come for its harmonious façade, elegant courtyard, and lavish decoration, which contrasts beautifully with the open square. It is an especially worthwhile stop if you want to understand the artistic and ceremonial importance of the Registan as a whole.
