Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum is one of Samarkand’s most important historic monuments, built in the early 15th century as the tomb of Timur (Tamerlane) and later used for members of his family. Its appeal lies in its elegant Timurid architecture: a fluted blue dome, richly tiled exterior, and a striking interior decorated with gold and carved stone. Smaller and quieter than some of the city’s major landmarks, it offers a focused visit for travelers interested in history, architecture, and the origins of the Timurid style that influenced later monuments across Central and South Asia.
