About Valley of the Butterflies

The Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) is a shaded nature reserve in northwest Ródos where, each summer, thousands of Jersey tiger moths gather along streams and plane trees. Wooden walkways and gentle trails lead past waterfalls, cool ravines, and a small monastery (Kalopetra) with panoramic views. It’s best for quiet nature walks, photography, and learning about local ecology at the modest museum. Visit in late June–September for peak populations; outside this period, come for the forested landscape rather than butterflies. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and respect signage to avoid disturbing the moths. Modest entry fee applies.
