Roatán, Honduras
Carambola Botanical Gardens, near West End on Roatán’s north shore, offers easy rainforest trails, a hillside lookout over Anthony’s Key, and diverse tropical flora, including orchids, ferns, and medicinal plants. Well-marked paths pass cacao, vanilla, and fruit trees, with interpretive signs that explain island ecology. Birdwatching is rewarding, and iguanas are common. The climb to “Carambola Mountain” is moderate and delivers sweeping reef views. It’s a low-key, self-guided outing suited to nature lovers and families, with shaded routes, occasional mosquitoes, and uneven terrain—sturdy shoes recommended. Allow 1–2 hours; guided tours are sometimes available. Admission is modest.
