Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Perched on a cliff in Niterói with sweeping views of Guanabara Bay, the Niterói Contemporary Art Museum (MAC) is a landmark of Brazilian modernism. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer in 1996, its saucer-like form and ramp approach are as compelling as the rotating exhibitions inside. Visitors come for the architecture, the curated contemporary Brazilian and international art, and panoramic photo opportunities across to Rio’s skyline and Sugarloaf. A short ferry or bridge ride from Rio, MAC pairs well with nearby beaches and the Niemeyer-designed coastal pathway, making it a worthwhile half-day cultural and scenic excursion.
