About Old Jewish Cemetery

Tucked behind Prague’s Pinkas Synagogue, the Old Jewish Cemetery (1439–1787) is one of Europe’s oldest surviving Jewish burial grounds. Over 12,000 visible headstones rise in layered clusters, reflecting centuries of limited space and rich community history. Notable burials include scholar Rabbi Judah Loew (the Maharal). Visitors come for its evocative atmosphere, Hebrew inscriptions, and insight into Prague’s Jewish past. Access is via the Jewish Museum ticket, which also covers nearby synagogues. Expect uneven paths and crowds; early visits are quieter. Ideal for travelers interested in history, culture, and memorial sites rather than ornate architecture.
