About Donkin Reserve

Donkin Reserve is a historic hilltop park in central Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) with panoramic views of Algoa Bay. Commissioned by Sir Rufane Donkin in 1820 as a memorial to his wife, it features the stone pyramid, the city’s lighthouse, and the colorful mosaic “Route 67” public art trail celebrating local heritage. Visitors come for accessible city history, open-air art, and a scenic, compact stop close to other downtown attractions. It’s best visited by day; allow 30–60 minutes to walk the grounds, climb the lighthouse (when open), and photograph the skyline and working harbor.
