Smeaton’s Tower is a striking red-and-white lighthouse that once stood on the Eddystone Reef and now overlooks Plymouth Hoe. Built by engineer John Smeaton in 1759, it pioneered durable lighthouse design using interlocking stone. Visitors can climb its narrow stairs to a compact lantern room for panoramic views of Plymouth Sound, the city, and Dartmoor on clear days. Inside, simple exhibits explain its construction and relocation in 1882. It’s a short, rewarding visit for those interested in maritime history, engineering heritage, or scenic viewpoints; note the steep steps and limited space.
