About Pisa Baptistery

Pisa’s Baptistery of St. John, the largest in Italy, anchors the Piazza dei Miracoli beside the Leaning Tower and cathedral. Begun in 1152, it blends Romanesque solidity with Gothic ornament, crowned by a distinctive conical dome. Inside, the vast, uncluttered rotunda offers remarkable acoustics—occasional vocal demonstrations reveal a haunting echo—and a finely carved 13th‑century pulpit by Nicola Pisano. Climb to the upper gallery for close views of the dome’s structure and the piazza below. Visit for architecture, craftsmanship, and a calmer counterpoint to the tower’s crowds. Combined tickets with other monuments make planning easy.
