About Piazza dei Cavalieri

Piazza dei Cavalieri is Pisa’s second most important square after Piazza dei Miracoli, known for elegant Renaissance architecture and layered history. Redesigned by Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century, it features the striking Palazzo della Carovana with sgraffito façades and the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri. Once the power center of the Knights of St. Stephen, it’s now home to the prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore. The square’s appeal lies in its quiet grandeur, scholarly atmosphere, and clear sense of historical continuity—ideal for visitors interested in architecture, civic history, and a less crowded side of Pisa.
