Okinawa, Japan
Shurijo Castle, perched above Naha, was the political and cultural heart of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Its vermilion gates, Chinese-influenced architecture, and intricate stone walls reflect centuries of maritime exchange between Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. Though heavily damaged by war and again by a 2019 fire, ongoing reconstructions and preserved zones, including the castle’s walls and gates, offer insight into Ryukyuan craftsmanship and court life. The adjacent Shurijo Castle Park and nearby museums provide context in an easy half-day visit. Go for the history, panoramic city views, and a distinct cultural heritage not found elsewhere in Japan.
