Oaxaca, Mexico
Mitla, 45 km southeast of Oaxaca City, is a compact archaeological site famed for intricate geometric mosaics unlike any other in Mesoamerica. Once a Zapotec religious center later used by the Mixtecs, its palaces feature precise stone fretwork, red-and-beige walls, and well-preserved courtyards. The Church of San Pablo, built atop pre-Hispanic foundations, shows the region’s layered history. Mitla is easy to visit on a half-day trip, often paired with mezcal distilleries and the Tule Tree. Go for detailed craftsmanship and cultural context rather than monumental scale; shade is limited, so visit early and bring water.
