Nara, Japan
Tōshōdai-ji is one of Nara’s most important historic temples, founded in 759 by the Chinese monk Ganjin. Known for its calm atmosphere and elegant early Buddhist architecture, it offers a quieter experience than some of the city’s busier landmarks. The main hall is a rare example of Nara-period design, and the temple is closely tied to the introduction of Buddhist precepts in Japan. Visit if you’re interested in religious history, classical architecture, or a more reflective side of Nara.
