About Tōdai-ji

Tōdai-ji is one of Nara’s most important historic sites and a landmark of Japanese Buddhism. Founded in the 8th century, it is best known for the Daibutsuden, a vast wooden hall that houses a monumental bronze Buddha. The temple grounds also offer broad paths, traditional gates, and easy access to Nara Park’s famous deer. Visitors interested in Japanese history, architecture, or religious art will find Tōdai-ji especially rewarding, while its central location makes it a practical stop on a wider visit to Nara.
