Nara, Japan
Sangatsu-dō, also known as Hokke-dō, is one of Nara’s oldest temple halls and part of the Tōdai-ji temple complex. Dating largely from the 8th century, it is valued for its quiet atmosphere, early Buddhist architecture, and important statues, including a striking image of Fukūkensaku Kannon. Set slightly apart from the busiest areas, it offers a more reflective experience than many of Nara’s better-known sights. Visitors interested in Japanese history, Buddhist art, or a less crowded temple stop will find it especially rewarding.
