Mexico City, Mexico
The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is Mexico’s most visited Catholic shrine, built beside Tepeyac Hill where tradition holds the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego in 1531. The modern circular basilica (1976) houses the revered tilma bearing her image, visible from moving walkways. Adjacent are the Old Basilica (1709), chapels, and landscaped gardens with city views. Expect large crowds, especially on December 12. It’s compelling for pilgrims, history and art enthusiasts, and anyone seeking insight into Mexican identity and faith; allow time for the museum, plaza, and quiet reflection. Modest dress and respectful behavior are advised.
