Koutoubia Mosque is Marrakech’s landmark 12th‑century mosque, famed for its elegant sandstone minaret rising 77 meters above the medina. A masterpiece of Almohad architecture, it features horseshoe arches, delicate geometric carving, and a serene garden setting. Non-Muslims cannot enter the prayer hall, but the exterior, minaret details, and surrounding Koutoubia Gardens are the main draws. It’s especially atmospheric at sunset when the call to prayer echoes across Jemaa el-Fna nearby. Visit for a sense of the city’s history, orientation within the medina, and excellent photo opportunities. Modest dress and respectful behavior are expected.
