Lucerne, Switzerland
Lucerne’s Water Tower (Wasserturm) is a 13th-century stone tower beside the Chapel Bridge, once used as a watchtower, treasury, and prison. Its octagonal form and riverside setting make it one of Switzerland’s most photographed landmarks. Visitors can’t usually enter, but it’s a prime stop for views of the Reuss River, timbered bridge paintings, and the Old Town’s medieval skyline. Come for history, architecture, and atmospheric strolls—especially at dawn or dusk—rather than for interior exhibits. Nearby cafes and lakefront promenades make it easy to combine with a walking tour of Lucerne’s historic center.
