Linz, Austria
St Martin’s Church (Martinskirche) is Linz’s oldest surviving church and one of Austria’s best-preserved early medieval buildings. Dating to the 8th–11th centuries, it sits below Linz Castle on the Römerberg, where Roman remains and medieval fresco fragments echo layered history. The small, austere interior and simple stone exterior offer a quiet contrast to the city’s modern museums. Visit if you enjoy early Christian architecture, archaeology, and atmospheric, uncrowded sites; skip if you prefer grand altarpieces or extensive exhibitions. Free to view from outside; interior access can be limited, so check current opening times.
