Leipzig Opera is one of Europe’s oldest opera institutions, tracing its roots to 1693. The current modernist building on Augustusplatz opened in 1960 and offers excellent acoustics and clear sightlines. Home to the acclaimed Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in the pit and a strong ensemble, it presents classic and contemporary opera, ballet, and family programs. Centrally located near the Gewandhaus and university, it’s easy to combine with city sightseeing.
