Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto, famed for its top two floors covered in gold leaf. Reflected in a mirror-like pond and framed by manicured gardens, it exemplifies Muromachi-era aesthetics and harmony with nature. The current structure dates to 1955, faithfully rebuilt after a 1950 fire, and houses a relic of the Buddha. A one-way path guides visitors through seasonal scenery, ending at a teahouse and small shops. Expect crowds and no interior access, but striking views in any season make it a rewarding, photogenic stop, especially for first-time visitors.
