Kyōto, Japan
Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northeastern Kyōto, built in the late 15th century by shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa. Despite its name, the pavilion is unadorned wood, reflecting wabi-sabi aesthetics. Visitors come for the refined gardens: a raked white-sand “Sea of Silver Sand,” the sculpted “Moon Platform,” and a strolling moss garden with pond views. A short hillside path offers a serene overlook of the temple and city. Best for those interested in Japanese garden design, Zen culture, and quieter beauty; it can be crowded, so early mornings or weekdays are recommended. Admission fee required.
