Batu Caves, 13 km north of central Kuala Lumpur, is a major Hindu pilgrimage site and one of Malaysia’s most recognizable landmarks. A towering golden statue of Lord Murugan marks the entrance to limestone caverns reached by a steep, colorful staircase. Inside, the main Temple Cave features shrines beneath a dramatic natural skylight. Visitors come for the blend of religion, geology, and photography, and to encounter resident macaques. It’s most crowded during Thaipusam (Jan–Feb). Expect many steps, modest dress requirements, and limited shade; early morning visits are recommended.
