Udawattakele Forest Reserve is a compact urban sanctuary perched behind the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. Once a royal pleasure garden, it now protects mid-country wet evergreen forest with easy trails, cool shade, and city viewpoints. Birdlife is a highlight—barbets, kingfishers, and endemic bulbuls—alongside monkeys, monitor lizards, and rich plant diversity, including giant lianas. A small hermitage and historic water ponds add cultural interest. Visit for a peaceful nature break close to town; go early to avoid heat, wear sturdy shoes, and expect leeches in wetter months. Modest entry fees and clear signage make independent visits simple.
