Jakarta, Indonesia
Istiqlal Mosque, Indonesia’s national mosque, stands opposite Jakarta’s cathedral, symbolizing religious harmony. Completed in 1978 and renovated in 2020, it is Southeast Asia’s largest mosque, with a vast prayer hall, towering minaret, and cool marble courtyards. Visitors can tour with guides to learn about Indonesia’s independence (istiqlal means “freedom”), architecture by Friedrich Silaban, and the mosque’s role in public life. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome outside prayer times with modest dress. Convenient central location, calm interiors, and historical context make it a worthwhile stop for culture, architecture, and city orientation.
