Rumeli Fortress (Rumeli Hisarı) crowns the narrowest point of the Bosphorus, opposite Anadolu Hisarı. Built by Sultan Mehmed II in 1452 to control the strait before the conquest of Constantinople, it remains a striking example of Ottoman military architecture. Visitors can walk along towers and walls, enjoy sweeping views of the Bosphorus, and explore a quiet garden within the ramparts. There’s minimal interpretive signage, so a guide or prior reading helps. Combine a visit with a Bosphorus stroll or ferry ride; the site involves stairs and uneven paths, making it less accessible for some.
