Irákleio, Greece
Irákleio, Greece
Knossos Palace, just south of Irákleio, is the largest Bronze Age site on Crete and the center of Minoan civilization. Excavated by Sir Arthur Evans, its multi-story ruins, storerooms, and throne room hint at a complex society famed for craftsmanship and trade. Reconstructed sections and vivid fresco replicas help visualize daily life and mythic associations, including the Minotaur legend. The site is compact yet layered, best visited with a guide to untangle history from restoration. Combine with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum—many original artifacts are there—for a fuller, rewarding picture of Europe’s earliest advanced culture.
