Innsbruck, Austria
Innsbruck’s Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) is the city’s best-known landmark, a late Gothic oriel completed in 1500 for Emperor Maximilian I. Its 2,657 gilded copper tiles once framed imperial appearances over the medieval square below. Today, the exterior is the main draw—photogenic against the Alps and Old Town façades. Inside, a small museum offers context on Maximilian, Tyrolean history, and courtly life. Visit if you enjoy historic architecture, compact museums, and lively street scenes; skip if you prefer expansive collections or less crowded spots. Best light and fewer tour groups come early morning or late afternoon.
