The Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha) on Lantau Island is one of Hong Kong’s most recognizable landmarks. Completed in 1993, the 34-meter bronze statue sits atop Ngong Ping, reached by 268 steps or via the Ngong Ping 360 cable car. It faces north to overlook the Chinese people and adjoins the serene Po Lin Monastery. Visitors come for panoramic mountain-sea views, Buddhist art, and a calm atmosphere away from the city. Combine a visit with nearby hiking trails and Tai O fishing village for a well-rounded day trip. Expect crowds on weekends; early mornings are quieter.
