Hambantota, Sri Lanka
Yala National Park, spanning the Hambantota and Monaragala districts, is Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife reserve. Its varied landscapes—dry scrub, lagoons, and rocky outcrops—support elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and one of the world’s highest densities of leopards. Jeep safaris offer reliable wildlife viewing alongside rich birdlife, especially around wetlands. Popular zones can feel busy, but early or late drives improve chances for sightings and quieter experiences. Combine a visit with nearby beaches and archaeological sites for a balanced itinerary. Best visited during the dry season (May–August), when animals gather at water sources and roads are more accessible.
