Hambantota, Sri Lanka
Ridiyagama Safari Park, near Hambantota, is Sri Lanka’s first drive-through safari park, spanning about 500 acres. Visitors explore in park jeeps or buses across themed zones—African Lion, Sri Lankan Elephant, and Mixed Herbivore—seeing free-roaming wildlife in spacious enclosures. It’s a convenient alternative to longer national-park safaris, especially for families and time-pressed travelers. Expect scheduled feeding times, basic facilities, and hot, dry weather; early mornings offer better animal activity. While sightings are less wild than in Yala or Udawalawe, the park provides accessible wildlife viewing and an introduction to conservation efforts in the island’s dry-zone landscape.
