About Kataragama Temple

Kataragama Temple, in Sri Lanka’s Hambantota District, is a major multi-faith pilgrimage site revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and indigenous communities. Dedicated chiefly to the deity Kataragama (Skanda/Murugan), it blends shrines, dagobas, and a mosque within a riverine, forested setting. Visitors come for daily pujas, drumming, and evening lamp offerings; the vibrant annual Esala festival (June–July) draws large crowds. The site’s appeal lies in living ritual, cross-cultural devotion, and a rustic town atmosphere rather than ornate architecture. Modest dress and respectful behavior are essential. Best visited in the cooler morning or at dusk; facilities are basic.
