Florence’s Baptistery of San Giovanni is an octagonal, Romanesque landmark famed for its shimmering marble façade and ornate bronze doors, including Ghiberti’s “Gates of Paradise.” Inside, a vast 13th‑century mosaic dome depicts biblical scenes in luminous gold, creating a dramatic, contemplative space. One of the city’s oldest buildings, it played a central role in civic and religious life—many Florentines, including Dante, were baptized here. Visit for outstanding medieval art, architectural harmony, and a manageable, focused experience that pairs well with the nearby Duomo and Campanile.
