Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is Edinburgh’s historic spine, stretching from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Lined with medieval tenements, closes, and courtyards, it offers a compact survey of the Old Town’s architecture and stories. Visitors find notable sites such as St Giles’ Cathedral, the Real Mary King’s Close, and the Scottish Parliament nearby, plus museums, whisky tastings, and street performers—especially during the summer festivals. It can be crowded and touristy, but remains the best introduction to the city’s history and atmosphere, with easy access to viewpoints, walking tours, and eateries along its cobbled route.
