About Pura Maospahit

Pura Maospahit (Pura Maospahit/Gelgel) is one of Denpasar’s oldest temples, notable for its 14th–15th century Majapahit-era red brickwork and carved terracotta reliefs. Rebuilt after the 1917 and 1976 earthquakes, it preserves rare East Javanese-Hindu architectural features uncommon in Bali. Visitors come for the quiet courtyard, distinctive candi bentar gate, and historical context linking Bali to Majapahit culture. It’s a compact stop suited to architecture lovers, photographers, and travelers exploring Denpasar’s heritage sites. Modest dress is required; ceremonies may limit access. Combine with nearby markets and museums for a half-day cultural itinerary.
