Catania, Italy
Castello Ursino is a 13th-century fortress built by Emperor Frederick II, anchoring Catania’s medieval past. Once a coastal stronghold now set inland by lava flows, it offers a striking look at Sicilian history and volcanic change. Inside, the Civic Museum presents Greek and Roman artifacts, medieval sculptures, and Renaissance paintings from the Biscari collection. The square, lava-stone walls and courtyard provide a calm, atmospheric visit. Go if you enjoy layered history, solid interpretive displays, and a manageable, uncrowded museum experience within walking distance of Catania’s historic center. Allow 60–90 minutes. Admission is modest; hours vary seasonally.
