Budapest’s Great Market Hall (Nagy Vásárcsarnok) is the city’s largest and oldest indoor market, opened in 1897 near Liberty Bridge. Its striking neo-Gothic brick façade and Zsolnay-tiled roof house three levels of fresh produce, meats, spices, and prepared foods. Ground floor stalls showcase paprika, salami, and seasonal goods; the upper gallery offers Hungarian street dishes and folk crafts; the basement features fish and pickles. It’s a practical stop for tasting local flavors, buying edible souvenirs, and observing everyday life. Go early on weekdays for lighter crowds; note that many stalls are cash-preferred and Sundays are typically closed.
