Gurten

Gurten is Bern’s local mountain, a quick tram-and-funicular ride from the city center. At 858 meters, it offers sweeping views of Bern’s UNESCO-listed Old Town, the Aare River, and, on clear days, the Alps. Visitors find easy walking trails, picnic lawns, a lookout tower, and family-friendly attractions like a playground and miniature railway (seasonal). In winter, gentle sledding slopes open when snow allows. The site hosts the Gurtenfestival each summer and a New Year’s fireworks vantage point. It’s an accessible half-day escape for scenery, light hiking, and relaxed downtime without leaving the city.
